A Luminus wind turbine at the Dow Silicones site in Seneffe
Monday 9 September 2019 – Luminus installed a wind turbine at the site of Dow Silicones Belgium, in the industrial estate of Seneffe. This wind turbine will produce approximately 5,100,000 kWh of renewable energy a year, 50% of which will be consumed by the company itself.
Dow is committed to social development and environmental progress
More than 10 years ago, Dow decided to invest in renewable energy and improve its energy efficiency. The company already owned a 2.3 MW wind turbine and now had a second one installed on its Seneffe site in the province of Hainaut. It is the group’s ambition to be one of the companies in its sector that is most active in the field of sustainable development.
Positive impact on the environment
The Enercon E92 wind turbine has a production capacity of 2.35 MW and is 150 metres high. Every year, it will generate 5.100.000 KWh, corresponding to the energy consumption of 1275 families. The company will consume 50% of this energy, while the remaining 50% will be injected into the grid (and provide 637 families with green energy).
The wind turbine’s installation will save 1443 tonnes of CO2 per year in comparison with the emissions of a thermal power plant. This saving is comparable to the emissions of over 630 cars(1) or 235 houses(2).
Leader in onshore wind energy
With its 196 wind turbines, 79 of which are situated in a business area, Luminus now has an installed capacity of renewable energy in Belgium of 461.5 MW. The company is the leader in the field of onshore wind energy and has the ambition to increase its installed capacity to more than 600 MW by 2021.
Grégoire Dallemagne, CEO of Luminus: “The installation of this wind turbine on its site will not only enable Dow to reduce its environmental footprint, but also to become more competitive thanks to the lower energy bill. We thank Dow for their trust and are proud to have been able to assist them in this investment, which is not only important from an economic, but also from an ecological or eco-logical point of view.”
Frank van der Meer, Manager of the Dow Silicones Belgium site: “Dow Silicones Belgium is very proud to host the inauguration of its second wind turbine together with Luminus on the Seneffe site. The partnership with Luminus to build this second wind turbine is completely in line with the Dow 2025 sustainability goals. Dow is always looking for opportunities to reduce the environmental footprint of its operations and this second wind turbine supports Dow in this objective. The partnership with Luminus enables Dow to have access to a more environmental friendly supply of energy in combination with an economic advantage. This project shows that environment and business can both benefit. As early as in 2011 we started our green journey with the inauguration of our first wind turbine. Eight years later, we are extremely proud of generating a large portion (approx. 35% in total) of our energy consumption thanks to our two wind turbines, solar panels and a cogeneration unit.”
(1) Based on 15,000 km/year and an average Belgian vehicle fleet emission of 152.5 g CO2/km
(2) Based on an average annual emission of 6,150 kg/home
