EDF Luminus and Eneco inaugurate 7 new wind turbines at Berloz
On Friday 3 June, EDF Luminus and Eneco will inaugurate the extension of the Berloz wind farm. Parallel to this official opening, a family day will be organised in cooperation with the municipalities on Sunday 5 June, an occasion for the local residents to discover the wind turbines.
A partnership at the service of renewable energy
This project is the result of a partnership between Eneco and EDF Luminus. In late 2013, EDF Luminus and Eneco obtained a permit for the construction of 7 additional wind turbines on the territory of the municipalities of Geer and Berloz. Four of these wind turbines are operated by EDF Luminus and three by Eneco. This new wind farm reflects the intention of the two partners to increase their production capacities in the Walloon region and proves that wind energy plays an increasingly important role in the energy mix, next to conventional forms of energy.
The project also reflects the political ambition, shared by the partners, to install wind turbines along infrastructures that shape the landscape, in this case the E40 motorway Brussels-Liège and the high-speed railway line connecting Brussels to Cologne and Frankfurt. EDF Luminus and Eneco are pleased with the relationship of trust they were able to establish with all local actors during the development and the construction of this wind farm.
Green energy for almost 20,000 families
The 7 new wind turbines are 150 metres high, have a capacity of 2.5 MW and will generate 53,340 MWh on an annual basis, corresponding to the annual consumption of 15,000 households*. Over a period of 20 years, the quantity of CO2 emissions avoided will be as high as 480,000 tonnes. These turbines complement the 3 wind turbines installed at this site by EDF Luminus in 2010. The first three turbines, which are still running today, already generated enough wind energy for 3,750 households, corresponding to 12,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions avoided on an annual basis.
Local residents in the spotlight
On Sunday, 5 June 2016, the local residents will have the opportunity to discover the wind turbines. Numerous free activities are planned for the entire family.
Programme for the family day : visit to a wind turbine, educational trail, bouncy castle, face-painting, clown, bars, performances, tasting of local products, tour of the wind turbines on foot, by bike or in a tractor, food trucks, artisanal ice cream,…
